On 13th September 2024, the Helping Everyone Live and Prosper (HELP) Society, in collaboration with the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Dima Hasao, held a significant event at Songpijang High School to observe World Suicide Prevention Week and spread awareness about drug abuse. This event specifically focused on the younger generation, aiming to educate everyone on mental health issues and encourage them to make healthier, informed choices.
The event provided a supportive environment where students, teachers, and community members could openly discuss the importance of mental health and the dangers of drug use. Through interactive sessions, participants learned how to recognize early signs of mental distress, understand the risks associated with drug addiction, and reduce the stigma around seeking help. By targeting young people, the event aimed to empower students to seek support for mental health challenges, promoting a healthier mindset.
Dr. Jubilee Darnei, a psychiatrist and District Program Officer of the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Dima Hasao, delivered a compelling presentation on mental well-being. She emphasized the importance of taking care of one’s mental health and explained how seeking help early on can prevent further complications. Dr. Darnei also discussed the strong link between drug use and mental health issues, urging students to avoid substance abuse and reach out for support if they or someone they know is struggling.
The Headmistress of Songpijang High School played an important role in supporting the event, ensuring full participation from the students. She highlighted the need for mental health awareness within schools and encouraged teachers and parents to be proactive in identifying and addressing mental health concerns.
To enhance awareness, informative leaflets were distributed, providing practical tips on maintaining mental health and avoiding drug use. These materials encouraged students to continue conversations about mental health and addiction within their families and communities.
HELP Society extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Darnei, the Headmistress, and all the students and teachers who made the event a success. Together, we can continue spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and supporting the mental well-being of young people. Through open dialogue and education, we can create a healthier and more compassionate society.
