In a significant step towards environmental conservation, Helping Everyone Live and Prosper Society, in support of the Haflong Forest Department, celebrated World Environment Day on the 5th of June 2024 with a grand Tree Plantation Drive and Free Sapling Distribution. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability and to contribute to the reforestation efforts in the region. Over 350+ trees were planted and distributed in various parts of Haflong, marking a substantial contribution to the local ecosystem.
The event, held under the hashtag #RestoringNature, saw enthusiastic participation from local residents, school children, NCC, and volunteers. The drive kicked off early in the morning at the I Love Dima Hasao area, a popular local spot known for its natural beauty. Volunteers gathered to plant a variety of native trees, including neem, banyan, peepal, and, various other species of trees that are known for their environmental benefits and resilience.
Mr. Surojeet Das, President of H.E.L.P Society addressed the participants, emphasizing the critical role of trees in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. “Today’s event is not just about planting trees; it’s about sowing the seeds of a sustainable future. Each tree we plant today will help restore the balance of our ecosystem and provide cleaner air and more stable soil,” he said. He also expressed his gratitude to the community for their overwhelming support. “It is heartening to see such a large turnout for our tree plantation drive. The enthusiasm and dedication of the people of Haflong is truly inspiring. Together, we are making a tangible difference in our environment,” he remarked.
Helping Everyone Live and Prosper Society, a prominent non-governmental organization dedicated to environmental and social causes, organized the event with meticulous planning. Volunteers distributed free saplings to the public, encouraging them to plant these trees in their own neighborhoods. This initiative was aimed at fostering a sense of responsibility among the residents towards their local environment.
The event also featured a session where experts discussed the benefits of trees and proper tree care techniques. This was aimed at ensuring that the saplings distributed would thrive and grow into mature trees, contributing long-term benefits to the environment.
Social media was abuzz with posts from the event, with participants sharing pictures and stories using the hashtag #RestoringNature. This digital engagement helped spread the message beyond Haflong, inspiring many others to take similar actions in their own communities.
The tree plantation drive and sapling distribution on World Environment Day exemplify the power of collective action in addressing environmental issues. H.E.L.P Society and the Haflong Forest Department have set a commendable example of community-driven environmental stewardship, proving that every small effort counts towards a greener and healthier planet.
